May 29, 2017 - Ontario is putting $920,924 into the Genomic Applications Partnership Program to develop new varieties of canola.
Researchers from the University of Guelph and Benson Hill Biosystems of the United States will collaborate on the project.
Canola contributes about $1.48 billion annually to Ontario’s economy, according to the Canola Council of Canada.
“Any development in canola is a positive for our industry,” said Hubert Beaudry, vice president of Ontario Canola Growers and a canola producer from Cache Bay.
He hopes some varieties will be developed for niche markets and for resistance to Swede midge insects.
